Frozen section of lung. Aerated alveolar parenchyma occupies the center of the section, with delicate alveolar septa lined by flattened pneumocytes. Marked vascular congestion and zones of intra-alveolar hemorrhage stain the upper field deep pink to red, and thick-walled muscular pulmonary arteries cut in various planes wind through the tissue. A broad band of deeply basophilic, collapsed (atelectatic) parenchyma runs along the inferior edge, showing how compressed alveoli darken as airspaces vanish. The pleural surface and septal lymphoid tissue are appreciable at the margins.
