Frozen section of lung. The parenchyma is uniformly cellular and moderately congested, with several complete bronchovascular bundles: muscular pulmonary arteries with bright eosinophilic media travel alongside small airways deep in the section. Flecks of black anthracotic (carbon) pigment dot the interstitium, a near-universal finding in adult human lung. Dark atelectatic bands seal the inferior and lateral edges where the tissue was compressed, and parallel fold ridges from cryosectioning cross the face of the section. A strand of translucent mucus-like material sits above the tissue as a mounting artifact.
