These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and StudyScope (“StudyScope,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) governing your use of the digital-microscope platform at thestudyscope.com (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
Who may use the Service
Accounts are for teachers and for school or district staff who administer licenses. You must be at least 18 years old, or an authorized staff member acting on behalf of a school, to create an account. Students do not create accounts — they join a lesson through an anonymous room code and are not asked to register or sign in.
Your account
You are responsible for the information you provide, for keeping your login credentials confidential, and for all activity under your account. Notify us promptly at support@thestudyscope.com if you suspect unauthorized use. You agree to provide accurate information and to keep it up to date.
Licenses and seats
Some features require an active license seat, which may be provided through a school or district license or an activation key. License terms — including the number of seats, the term length, and renewal — are set when the license is issued. When a license expires or a seat is revoked, access to seat-gated features ends, though you may retain access to a basic account. Sharing a single seat among multiple teachers, or circumventing seat limits, is not permitted.
A seat is licensed to one named person. Signing in to one account from several people or places at once may sign other sessions out, interrupt a live presentation, or lose unsaved work. Where we believe seats are being shared or seat limits circumvented, we may suspend or terminate the seats involved, and we may suspend or terminate the entire license — including every other seat under it, across the school or district — without refund. If more people need access, add seats from the billing portal or contact support@thestudyscope.com.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service unlawfully or to infringe others’ rights;
- Upload or present content that is unlawful, harmful, or inappropriate for a classroom;
- Attempt to access accounts, data, or systems you are not authorized to access;
- Probe, scan, disrupt, or overload the Service, or bypass its security or rate limits;
- Reverse engineer, scrape, or resell the Service or its slide catalog except as allowed by law; or
- Share room codes or share links beyond your intended class audience.
Your content
You — or, where your arrangement with your school or district provides, that school or district — keep ownership of the lessons, notes, and other materials you create (“Your Content”). You grant us a limited license to host, store, process, and display Your Content solely to operate and provide the Service to you and the students you present to. We do not sell Your Content or use it for advertising. You are responsible for having the rights to any material you add, and for ensuring it is appropriate for your students.
Privacy and student data
Our Privacy Policy describes what information we collect and how we use and protect it. Students are not asked for personal information, and we do not sell personal information, show advertising, or build profiles of students or teachers.
Our content and the slide catalog
The Service, including its software, design, and curated microscope-slide catalog and imagery, is owned by StudyScope or its licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service and to present catalog slides to your students for educational purposes. You may not redistribute, sell, or publish the catalog imagery outside of classroom use without our permission.
Live sessions
The Service lets you present slides live while students follow along. Live sessions depend on network conditions and third-party infrastructure, and we cannot guarantee uninterrupted delivery. You are responsible for supervising your classroom and for the content you choose to present.
Service availability and changes
We work to keep the Service available but we do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may add, change, suspend, or discontinue features, and we may perform maintenance that temporarily limits availability. We will make reasonable efforts to schedule disruptive maintenance outside of typical class hours.
Third-party services
The Service relies on third-party providers for hosting, email, and delivery. Your use of the Service is also subject to those providers’ terms where applicable. We are not responsible for third-party services we do not control.
Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, StudyScope will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, use, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred U.S. dollars if you paid nothing.
Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time and may request account deletion by emailing support@thestudyscope.com. Deleting your account deletes Your Content along with it, as described in our Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms or if necessary to protect the Service or its users. Some provisions — including ownership, disclaimers, and limitation of liability — survive termination.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Fort Bend County, Texas, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify account holders. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised Terms.
